How to organise a channel partner or dealer meet

A channel partner event runs once or twice a year over two to three nights, usually at a resort away from the partners' own city. Give the business day real content, then end with a recognition evening, which is what partners remember.

In short

  • Run it once or twice a year, over two to three nights, usually at a resort away from the partners' own city.
  • Give the business day real content: a skills workshop or keynote, then the plan for the year ahead.
  • End the programme with recognition. An awards evening is what partners remember and talk about.

Start with what the partner needs

The point of a partner event is to make partners more committed to your brand and better at selling it. Decide which of these matters most this year, and build the programme around it.

Loyalty
Time with senior leaders and a clear sign that the company values the relationship.
Capability
Training on products, pricing, service and selling skills that partners can use the next week.
Direction
A clear plan for the year ahead, with targets, schemes and launches.

The usual shape: two to three nights

Most partner meets run for two or three nights, often with families invited. The days below can be shortened or stretched to the group.

Day 1: arrival and the evening
Check-ins, an icebreaker or team activity, then an evening where the head of the company welcomes the group, reveals the theme and opens a gala night with live music and dinner.
Day 2: the business day
Partners attend a full day of sessions. Families go on a sightseeing or shopping tour.
Day 2 evening: awards
A recognition ceremony with a performance, held at the venue, to honour top partners.
Day 3: close and gifts
Check-out, with a take-home gift for each partner and family.

What goes into the business day

Split the day into two parts. In the first half, run a skills workshop or a keynote from a speaker the partners respect. In the second half, the leadership team presents the plan for the year and answers questions.

Invest in the training. Partners who are taught how to sell your product tend to sell more of it. Keep sessions short, and leave time for conversation between them.

Make recognition the high point

An awards evening gives partners a moment in front of their peers. Choose categories that reward the behaviour you want, such as growth, new accounts or service quality. Announce the winners on the night, with their names on screen.

For the format, the permits and the run of show, see award ceremony management.

Choose the place and the planner

Pick a resort that holds the whole group, with a hall for the business session and outdoor space for the evenings. A change of scenery is part of the reward.

ICE India ran a four-day dealer meet for a pharma company at a beachfront resort in Mandrem, North Goa, from arrivals to the awards gala. Read the case study. For a partner programme in India or abroad, see the corporate MICE agency page.

Questions

How often should we hold a channel partner event?

Once or twice a year. Annual is the usual rhythm. A second, shorter regional meet suits a large or spread-out network.

Should families be invited to a channel partner event?

Often, yes. A family programme with sightseeing during the business day turns a work trip into a reward. Decide early, as it changes the room count and the budget.

How do we measure whether a partner event worked?

Set the measure first: repeat orders, scheme enrolment or sales in the quarter after. Collect feedback within two days. The mistakes guide covers measurement in more detail.
