The base for most offsites
Puri
The beach and the resorts along the Konark Marine Drive and Baliapanda are the base for most offsites. The Jagannath Temple is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites; the present temple dates from the 12th century and its main tower is about 65 m tall.
The temple admits Hindus only, at every gate. Visitors of any faith can see the tower and the Sudarshana Chakra from the roof of the Raghunandan Library opposite the Singha Dwara, which is free to enter.
For mixed groups ICE India plans the temple visit as an optional morning, with the library roof, the Grand Road and the surrounding market as the shared part, so that nobody is left out. Delegates are briefed on local etiquette beforehand.
- Konark
- The Sun Temple, a 13th-century monument attributed to Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. Its carved chariot wheels are the best-known image of Odisha.
- Chilika Lake
- Between 900 and 1,165 sq km depending on the season, the lake is home to the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin and more than 225 bird species. Boats run from Satapada.
- Raghurajpur
- A heritage crafts village 14 km from Puri, known for Pattachitra painting and Gotipua dance, the forerunner of Odissi. Many houses double as studios, which makes it a good stop for a craft workshop or a guided walk.
