A blend of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures and cuisines forms Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. From skyscrapers, plush malls and haute cuisine to street side shopping and hawker food stalls, this city has it all!

As you can see in the weather chart, there is no cool and pleasant season in this city of seven million people and it remains hot and humid throughout the year. However, June and July are the months which are comfortable outdoors and this is the time recommended for travel.

Flying time from most Indian cities to Kuala Lumpur is between 5 and 5 and a half hours and Air India, Jet Airways and Malaysia Airlines are among the few carriers who operate daily flights to Kuala Lumpur. The most stunning pair of buildings, ones that KL is famous for, and ones that you’ll see a lot of, are the Petronas Twin Towers. Standing tall at 88 stories, with a double decker Sky Bridge connecting them on the 41st and the 42nd floor, these twin towers are the number one tourist attraction in Kuala Lumpur. The Sky Bridge and the Observation Deck on the 86th floor offer amazing views of the entire city and you can buy your tickets here.

Once you are done visiting The Towers, head back down to the Suria KLCC mall. The mall is divided into three sections, Ampang Mall, Park Mall and Ramlee Mall. It also has Malaysia’s first concert hall, Dewan Filharmonik Orchestra, Petronas Art Gallery, Aquaria KLCC and the Petrosains Science Discovery Centre.

 The Aquaria KLCC is the largest aquarium in the world covering 5000 sqft and is located on the concourse level. It’s home to over 150 species of marine life including tiger sharks, sea snakes, seahorses etc. If you’d like a closer view, well than guess what, they also have a diving programme (for professional divers only) in which the divers are required to sign a waiver form. The diving equipment will be provided to the divers. And for the amateurs, there is a cage rage programme where visitors are taken into the tanks within a submerged cage.

Once you’ve had your fill of the above attractions, you might want to go check out Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, another huge shopping mall. The best way to get there is via the walkway. Approx 1.2 km long, the Bukit Bintang Pedestrian Walkway, connects the two major tourist attractions in KL, the KLCC and Bukit Bintang. The bridge is air conditioned and takes approximately 20 minutes to walk from one end to another. From the walkway you can also see the KL City walk, a 1200 ft long entertainment strip with loads of F&B and retail outlets. Also here are three local malls that are inter connected – BB Plaza, Sungei Wang & Low Yat Plaza. The later is a hub for all things electronic.

Although, if you’re in the market for some cheap souvenir shopping, head over to Chinatown in Petaling Street, approx. 3 kms away from the Pavilion Mall. It is recommended to go after sundown as this place lights up and becomes very colorful and beautiful. With hundreds of stalls, you are most likely to find almost anything at really cheap prices. What’s more exciting is that these prices can further be brought down depending on your negotiation skills!

Next stop, Istana Negara, the Royal Palace which was built in 1928. Within the Istana Negara is a six-hole golf course, a lake, badminton and tennis courts, a swimming pool and a beautiful garden making this Royal Palace spread across 28 acres of land. The Palace is divided into two sections, the east wing and the west wing. There are a few thematic Rooms on the second floor like Dewan Mengadap where the king welcomes his guests and Bilik Duta, solely dedicated for the meetings between the King and the Prime Minister of Malaysia. Bilik Permaisuri is the room where the Queen entertains her guests. All of these rooms are in the east wing. The west wing is only for hosting conferences of all rulers.

The National Mosque, Masjid Negara covering 13 acres of land is able to accommodate fifteen thousand worshippers. The main prayer hall, facing the Kaabaah in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, has 48 smaller domes around it. The main dome of the Mosque is an 18 point star representing the 5 pillars of Islam and the 13 states of Malaysia and can accommodate eight thousand worshippers. The Mosque’s most prominent feature is the 73 meter high minaret. The outdoor gardens with white marble pools and fountains is really quite beautiful and very impressive. Believers from different faiths can enter the mosque once the namaaz is over and should be dressed appropriately (arms should be covered till elbows and legs, fully covered). Headscarves for women can be borrowed from the entrance gate of the mosque.

Just a little over 1 km from Masjid Negara is the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. Another popular tourist attraction in KL attracting over 2 lakh tourists a year. A ticket is required to enter this park which is home to over 200 species and 3000 birds.

About an hour outside KL city are the famous Batu Caves, a limestone his that has a series of caves & cave temples. The cave is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India, and is dedicated to Lord Murugan.

A couple of really nice places to visit just outside KL city are the Cameron Highlands and Genting Highlands.  The later features an expansive resort with casinos and a theme park as well. Don’t forget to take a ride on the Genting Skyway on your trip up there.
